r/Games Moderator
Becoming a moderator for the r/Games subreddit was exposure to the gaming community at large, both from an industry perspective and a community perspective. I worked with other moderators to shape the rules that governed the subreddit, ensuring content and discussions were insightful and respectful. In the process of moderation, I learned to be discerning and deliberate; in instances where policy was unclear or a situation was particularly sensitive, I worked consistently with other moderators to get their input and decide the best course of action going forward.
At the same time, we also knew the potential impact we had within our space overall, and as such, we made multiple endeavors to make it welcoming, as well as an opportunity for developers to shed some light on the projects they were working on. To this end, we began organizing Ask Me Anything opportunities in collaboration with interested developers, as well as designating specific times for developers to be able to share their game free of any rules against self-promotion. My most significant involvement was when the subreddit shut down for April Fool’s in 2019, highlighting what was becoming an increasingly caustic atmosphere. This both called attention to the issue and made our stance clear on the subreddit being an inclusive and welcoming space for all enthusiasts.
